Statement from the American Nurses Association\California on the U.S. Intention to Withdraw from the World Health Organization
As nurses, we know that health is a global issue. The announcement of the United States’ intention to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) is deeply concerning to us at ANA\California.
The WHO plays a critical role in addressing global health crises, advancing public health initiatives, and coordinating responses to pandemics like COVID-19. Withdrawal from this organization not only jeopardizes our ability to collaborate with international partners but also risks undermining progress in combating infectious diseases, addressing health inequities, and strengthening global healthcare systems.
We strongly believe that the health of people in the U.S. is interconnected with the health of people worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how critical it is to have a coordinated, collaborative global response to emerging health threats. Now more than ever, we need to remain engaged with international health organizations to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.
ANA\California urges policymakers to reconsider this decision and prioritize continued partnership with the WHO. Nurses across the nation stand united in advocating for policies that promote global health equity and support the essential work of organizations like the WHO. Together, we can achieve better health outcomes for all.
